Families Learning Together: An enjoyable way to improve literacy and study skills.

The Workshop Experience

• For pupils and parents working together
• Four half day workshops over one term
• Themed around the family tree, or family history or a story
• Aimed at pupils in years 5, 6, 7 & 8
 Introduction
 organising thoughts and work
 how to do the research
 understanding dyslexia from parent and child perspectives
 Reading
 reading for information
 skimming and scanning
 Writing
 raising levels of attainment
 Spelling
 how to support with spelling difficulties
 Presentations

Purpose

• Positive approach to literacy
• Establish parent/child partnership
• Enable parents to work more effectively with their child to successfully support study needs
• Enable student to cope with independent learning
• To help parents to better understand the learning needs of their child.

The workshops aim to support through:

• A solution based focus
• Learning how to organise and plan a piece of work
• Producing and presenting a finished product
• Collaborative learning
• Parental involvement – how to help successfully at home
• Helping parents to understand the changes in education and the focus on teaching and learning styles
• Recognition of dyslexic difficulties
• Working alongside children with similar problems
• Increased self-esteem
• Development of IT skills

Outcomes

• Development of relationships - pupils/parents/staff
• Building trust
• Growth of confidence - parents and pupils
• Parents understanding their child’s dyslexic difficulties
• Parents understanding their own dyslexic difficulties
• Helping parents cope with their anxieties for their child
• Progression in learning outcomes – writing, spelling, organisation and research
• Enjoyable and satisfying experience – and great fun

Parents views

• It has helped me to understand my child’s problems in organisation and to use different methods to help in his understanding

• It has helped me know how far to push the boys within their capabilities without hitting the brick wall of resentment.

• It was useful for the boys for – Use of different media. Increased confidence. Being made to feel useful and knowledgeable.

• Getting information on dyslexia and hints to help my child with his work

• It was all useful

• Extremely enjoyable, the staff knowledgeable and understanding

• The subjects covered enabled for an engaging and enjoyable experience for activity between parent and child.

• Well presented in a casual and relaxed manner.

• The people that met and making new friends was useful. If workshops carry on will definitely be there

• Enjoyed being able to meet others in same situation and meet and talk to the teachers and helpers (who I may not have met otherwise) who work with my child on a day-to-day basis.

• It has helped me to understand her more and understand where she is coming from
